Replacing Car Steering Wheels: 4 Things to Know

Steering wheel replacements are a common used car part vehicle owners make when trying to customize the driving experience.

On the bright side, a used steering wheel can be better suited to your particular driving style. A smaller steering wheel can give you more precision and control when turning as compared to larger, factory steering wheels.

On the downside, you might lose some factory settings and functionality that originally came with the car. (Think: hands-free Bluetooth connectivity, volume control, and cruise control.)

If you’re interested in replacing your car’s steering wheel, keep reading to find out how to change a steering wheel.

How to Change a Steering Wheel

Steering wheels are commonly removed by auto repairmen to access areas behind the wheel that might need repairs or fixes. Luckily, steering wheels are easy enough to remove that car owners can remove them themselves with relative ease.

1. Find a steering wheel that fits your vehicle

Not all steering wheels are created equal. You’ll have to make sure your used steering wheel fits correctly into your vehicle’s steering column and can be comfortably bolted together.

Be sure to measure the diameter of the wheel you’re interested in and other specs to ensure it will fit in your steering column.

2. Disconnect the steering wheel wires

You’re going to want to be delicate with this step, as the small but mighty wires connected throughout your steering wheel are essential to proper operation of the vehicle. It is best to disconnect the car battery to ensure no funny business happens with the electrical wiring as you disassemble.

Be sure to carefully remove the airbag and save any screws that are necessary to unscrew and store them safely with the old steering wheel.

3. Replace the old steering wheel on the center lug nut

The center lug nut is what holds the steering wheel in position, so carefully disconnect any remaining wires and screws holding the original steering wheel in place.

When ready, position the new steering wheel onto the center lug nut and begin securing it into place. Be sure to use lubricant as the center column is essential for smooth rotation of the steering wheel. It holds the steering wheel in its proper position and ensures your vehicle turns appropriately to your maneuvering!

4. Reassemble the wiring

Once the steering wheel is secured on the center lug nut, you can begin replacing the wiring, screws, and airbag. Be sure to reconnect the car battery before finishing the job.

And voila! You’ve just successfully modified your vehicle with a new steering wheel.
