If you are no longer able to drive a car and it has been rotting away in your driveway, that doesn’t mean it’s completely useless – you can sell a junk car for parts and earn some cash. How can you get rid of a junk car and sell it to get money? We have outlined some tips in this post.
When Should I Junk My Car?
When you are just trying to get rid of your junk vehicle as soon as possible, it’s best to just call your local salvage yard or scrap yard. A quick google search will show your nearest salvage yard and start by making a few calls. Prior to calling, make sure you have all your information ready to tell them the year, make, model, mileage, damage and validate that you have the vehicle’s title in hand.
How to Get Rid of a Junk Car
Here are some tips and considerations on how you can successfully get rid of a junk car, by selling it to a salvage yard or scrap yard.
TIP #1: Do not say yes to the first offer you get.
Most salvage yards offer about the same price for scrap value if the car is in poor condition, however, you want to find one that will give you a picked-up price. You will not receive the same amount as if you dropped your car off, but this will save you time and the hassle of dealing with tow companies. Call a few local yards, compare prices, and arrange for pick up. If your car is operational- drive it on down and get paid.
TIP #2: Clean your car before selling it.
Remember, you are still selling your vehicle to a company. Regardless of your feelings towards your clunker, remove your belongings and give it a quick clean. If your car rolls in looking like junk, then you will get paid accordingly. A well-kept looking car is far more valuable (to the right buyer) than one that looks like a dumpster on wheels.
TIP #3: Sell your car or truck to a reputable company.
Whether your selling to a salvage yard or a scrap yard, make sure they are reputable and have good reviews. There are two reasons for doing this.
Reason 1: Make sure they have good business practices as far as recycling goes. Here at Nationwide, we remove all parts that could be salvaged for resale, including car engines, fenders, alternators, and transmissions. Then, we drain all fluids and gases properly, and recycle them in an environmentally safe fashion. Our vehicles are then crushed and processed at an automobile shredder. Sell your vehicle to a company that is helping with the problem, not part of it.
Reason 2: The second reason is for your sanity. No one wants to deal with smoke in mirrors and a convoluted transaction. Do your homework and select a company that has a good reputation and a helpful sales team.
